Dorrington house is a neglected Art Deco apartment complex built in 1933. The Complex has largely remained unrenovated and has come to a time when works are required to bring it to new life. 

Enter our Dorrington client. Purchasing the property in 2021, we set out with our client to update and created a modern Art Deco apartment while keeping the traditional features of the Art Deco movement. As the complex is heavily protected by a ‘heritage overlay’ we had to make sure that we followed all the guidelines that help protect beautiful old buildings like Dorrington House.

The colour black was heavily used throughout the period, so we made sure we keep aspects of black in each space. From the black cabinetry in the kitchen to the stunning hints of black in the floor-to-ceiling, terrazzo tiles in the bathroom. Bottle green fan tiles can be found in the kitchen splashback the gold tapware and hardware finish the space just nicely. 

The one thing to keep in mind above and beyond the beautiful features and ultimately the wonderful renovation is the uniqueness of the space and just how much useable space our designer was able to fit into this one-room studio apartment. A bathroom, kitchen, study, living space and hidden queen-size ‘Murphy’ bed have all been cleverly incorporated to comfortably house 1 person.
