The Bay

Set in the heart of Port Melbourne, The Bay Project saw the complete transformation of a two-bedroom apartment for a vivacious retired couple ready to embrace city living. Having recently sold their large family home and with a country retreat already in hand, this energetic duo needed their new apartment to feel just as luxurious, liveable and personal as the home they left behind.

Every inch of this early 2000s apartment was redesigned and rebuilt—from flooring to finishes. The standout feature? A breathtaking 4.5-metre Brazilian Avocado Quartzite benchtop, which became the centrepiece of the open-plan kitchen and the heart of the renovation. Full-height black cabinetry allowed the stone to shine, while metallic cabinetry to the rear of the island added an extra layer of prestige and elegance.

With limited space to work within the apartment footprint, we reconfigured the floorplan to convert one large bathroom into a functional main bathroom and an elegant powder room. By slightly reducing the size of the second bedroom and reclaiming space from the oversized original bathroom, we introduced smart design that maximised both usability and comfort.

The main bathroom features a spacious two-person walk-in shower, a wall-hung vanity, and a wall-hung toilet—all set in a natural, calming palette. A Moroccan terracotta coloured custom vanity brings softness and a feminine touch, in line with the client’s brief. In contrast, the powder room leans into a more masculine aesthetic with herringbone-laid terracotta tiles wrapping the floors and walls, creating both drama and the illusion of space.

Throughout the apartment, wide timber floorboards in a custom tone were imported from Germany, adding warmth and richness underfoot.

This high-end Port Melbourne renovation is one of our most talked-about projects to date. It’s a stunning example of thoughtful downsizing, proving that with clever design and quality materials, even compact spaces can offer comfort, luxury and timeless appeal.
